Sad ...

because I found out yesterday afternoon that a teacher I worked with for six years died of cancer on Thursday. We weren't even close; she was just "always there," if you will. She was the one who told me about the job opening at that school when I subbed in her class one day.

I am surprised it has affected me so much. Like I said, we weren't close at all. I knew she had been battling cancer, but they were continuing chemotherapy, and she told the office she would return in November.

It's just sticking in my brain. Yesterday we were at Disneyland and it occured to me as we were leaving that she will never get to come here anymore. The Lord quickly reminded me that she is having WAY more fun in heaven with Him than we just did at Disneyland. But still ...

I think I'm sad at the finality of it. That I won't see her strolling the hallways at the school; I won't hear her voice; I won't hear her laugh; I won't get to hear her sarcastic, dry sense of humor as she's telling stories about work frustrations. And I'm sad because she was a single parent who leaves behind an 18-year-old and a 22-year old. So young to be left in this world without a mother.

I want to pull myself together so I can enjoy my weekend with Ashley and grieve when I come back. Reminds me, in a way, of your friend, Ronalyn. I'll say a prayer for her right now.

I'm sorry to read about your friend!
Even though you just worked with her and were not close, it still hurts when you hear of their passing. I hope she has a close-knit family who can give love and support to her children.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend.. It's always hard to hear such news even though she is resting in a better place.

Thanks so much for that extra prayer.. she has been on mind so much, for tomorrow she is off to leave behind her family to do radiation. I just can't even imagine what she is going through or how she is feeling. Her youngest is just 4 months old.. My heart really hurts.. :) But thanks again for your added prayers:)

I will be thinking of you as well.

Isn't it strange how the death of anyone that we know affects us? Whether we were family or friends, or just acquaintances, death affects us in one way or another. Maybe because it is the lot of everyone one on earth. Maybe because it could have so easily been us. We don't know why, but we know who knows. And in that we take comfort.

"Cool" Lunch

I usually make Ashley take her lunch three days out of the week (she "gets" to buy on the other two days, even though she doesn't actually eat the food--part of the whole "fit in with the crowd" issue) . I was having a SERIOUSLY hard time getting her to bring her lunch, and it occurred to me one day that if she took "fancier" sandwiches, she might not fight it so much. So ... I started making Chicken Salad and getting various toppings (she likes the jars of roasted peppers, pepperoncinis, alfalfa sprouts, tomato, etc.) as well as buying bolillos or other fancier sandwich breads. That went over well. It went over so well that her friends would ask for a taste, and rave about how yummy the sandwich was. They were actually jealous of Ashley's lunch (yeah! now she won't be the "geek" who brings her lunch; she'll be the girl who brings cool lunches--mission accomplished and then some!) . One of her friends I know rather well, because...

Relaxing ... Refreshing ... Adventure

WARNING: MANY PICTURES!! We never go on day trips, but this week (to take the kids' minds off the fact that Daddy is gone--in the Philippines), I took the kids to Santa Barbara. I made it a surprise (which I don't often do), and we had a relaxing day together. And, of course, I took a gazillion pictures (actually 64). So, after a lot of painstakingly difficult choices, I have narrowed the pictures I will post to "only" about 10. So, family, sit back and enjoy, and friends, skim through them quickly :) The day started with the L-O-N-G ride (2 1/2 hours to be exact), and the proverbial "Are we there yet?" with a little twist: Ashley would ask "Are we halfway there yet?" Are we 3/4 of the way?" etc. You get the picture. They were great in the car until the last 20 minutes or so. We started our time there with a nice little picnic at this really neat park. Here are some pictures: This picture doesn't really do the park justice, but it will giv...
