A "Sewing Machine" sort of day

Last week we had a lot of fun and did a lot of cleaning, and this weekend was busy (as all weekends seem to be!); so today, I determined that aside from the regular chores I would spend some "me" time at the sewing machine. It took me about two hours to create this simple pincushion (it would have taken a real seamstress about 1/2 hour, probably, lol!). I really like it. I used scraps of fabric, and had lots of fun.

I also have completed two of the eight placemats my sister "commissioned" me to make. Just thought I'd show you what they look like. This is the front:

and this is the back:

As you can tell (especially from the back!), they are rather "amateur-ish," but I don't think she'll mind. Once she puts plates on, you won't be able to tell that much that the stitching is not straight. Of course, the most important factor is not that she likes them--it's that I am having fun making them :)

Ta ta for now. Off to finish the dishes so the kids and I can make chocolate chip cookies for dessert before bedtime (nothing like sending them to bed with a sugar high, lol!). Once in a while I allow myself to break my strict rules so my kids can have a little bit of fun. And after their bedtime, maybe I'll get a few more placemats finished ... now that I'm excited to "break in" my new pincushion!
Please ignore these last pictures. I uploaded them in "medium" format, but decided after seeing the post that they were too small for my taste. So I enlarged them, but I don't know how to delete the medium ones. Sorry!

Your pincushion is adorable. I never knew that you sewed. How nice. And, maybe you can teach me. Pam Lundy gave me one of her old machines - probably because she was tired of seeing my valances duct-taped together instead of stitched.

Great work Carmela - they don't look 'amateurish' - did I spell that right??!! Now that you've revealed your talents we all may be commissioning you too!!! :-)

I'm so excited! I can't wait to get them and use them. Maybe I'll leave the Americana stuff out a little longer since I know my place mats are in the mail! Thank you so much!! I love them!! Your darling sister!!

Missing You

We've been having internet problems since last Friday evening. It goes on and off sporadically. Someone should be coming today to fix it (and of course it's working perfectly right now, lol!). I don't usually blog in the middle of the day (too much house stuff to do) , but I gotta grab the internet while I can. I'm desperate! It has actually startled me to realize how connected I am to all of you--even you, Ronalyn, and I have never met you. I have so missed reading blogs, commenting on them, and posting. I have really felt disconnected to you all (yeah, I'm a "recovered hick" but I can't erase that expression from my vocabulary--however, I don't say, "y'all." I do draw the line there. Sorry if I'm offending anyone--as in my sister and brother-in-law, but I don't consider you guys hicks.) . So I hope the person who comes to repair the internet issue can perform a miracle so I don't have to miss you anymore :)

A Rare Moment Captured on Film

No, it's not a rare moment that my kids brush their teeth (well, it would be if left up to them!). I walked into the bathroom tonight to see both my kids in the bathroom brushing their teeth ... and this is the rare moment--they actually got along! I had to run and get my camera to document this rare moment of parental bliss. And now I'm sharing it with you. Now isn't your day more complete?!

Time Will Tell

It's always so "wow" to me when I'm going about my business as usual, and "out of the blue" God answers a prayer. I think He's answering my prayer. Time will tell. I've been praying for quite a while about what to do about employment. I want to find a job that I can do only during the day when the kids are at school--I still need to be available to take them to school and pick them up because sometimes my husband needs to go to work early. I have thought about various jobs (subbing, tutoring, doing something with technology 'cause I'm good with computers, finding a business I could do at home that doesn't require much training, etc.) , but child care is usually an issue and for the life of me I can't figure out what I could do from home. I'm soooo not business-oriented. It is so important to me to be there for my kids on a regular basis. I enjoy taking them to school. I enjoy being the one who gets to pick them up from school (exc...
