The Story Behind these Shoes

I'm only sharing this story because it's funny, and so typical of me. Anyone who knows me well will smile and nod their head when reading this.

So, I go to pick Ashley up after school yesterday. I left a couple of minutes later than usual, so I was in a hurry. I decided to skip the shoes because she comes to the car anyway, and it was only going to be a few minutes (yes, I'm aware it's against the law to drive with no shoes). However, just as the door closes, I realize I accidentally left the keys in the house. Oops. There is no spare handy, and all the windows are closed. So after picking Ashley up, we drove to Carlito's work to get his key (only one hour each way in rush hour traffic!). He wasn't there when we arrived (he was fixing a problem at another clinic), so we had to wait.

I, of course, told the kids we would wait in the car because I was soooo not going to show up at the clinic in my bare feet looking for my husband. After sitting there for ten minutes in a hot car with two bored children, I acquiesed to Ashley's Plan B: go to the Payless just a couple of doors down and buy a pair of flip-flops.

So I did. I ran inside, and tried to find an aisle where there were no other shoppers. Ashley fetched me flip-flops till I found one I liked and that fit, I bought them, ran back to the car and put them on.

Now, every time I put them on, I find myself chuckling. Who knew shoes could put me (one of the most shop-a-phobic women in the universe) in a good mood?! :)

That is too funny! At least you got a new pair of flip flops out it! Luckily they were cute ones. What if there were only man-flops left and you had to wear those? :)

"Cool" Lunch

I usually make Ashley take her lunch three days out of the week (she "gets" to buy on the other two days, even though she doesn't actually eat the food--part of the whole "fit in with the crowd" issue) . I was having a SERIOUSLY hard time getting her to bring her lunch, and it occurred to me one day that if she took "fancier" sandwiches, she might not fight it so much. So ... I started making Chicken Salad and getting various toppings (she likes the jars of roasted peppers, pepperoncinis, alfalfa sprouts, tomato, etc.) as well as buying bolillos or other fancier sandwich breads. That went over well. It went over so well that her friends would ask for a taste, and rave about how yummy the sandwich was. They were actually jealous of Ashley's lunch (yeah! now she won't be the "geek" who brings her lunch; she'll be the girl who brings cool lunches--mission accomplished and then some!) . One of her friends I know rather well, because...

Relaxing ... Refreshing ... Adventure

WARNING: MANY PICTURES!! We never go on day trips, but this week (to take the kids' minds off the fact that Daddy is gone--in the Philippines), I took the kids to Santa Barbara. I made it a surprise (which I don't often do), and we had a relaxing day together. And, of course, I took a gazillion pictures (actually 64). So, after a lot of painstakingly difficult choices, I have narrowed the pictures I will post to "only" about 10. So, family, sit back and enjoy, and friends, skim through them quickly :) The day started with the L-O-N-G ride (2 1/2 hours to be exact), and the proverbial "Are we there yet?" with a little twist: Ashley would ask "Are we halfway there yet?" Are we 3/4 of the way?" etc. You get the picture. They were great in the car until the last 20 minutes or so. We started our time there with a nice little picnic at this really neat park. Here are some pictures: This picture doesn't really do the park justice, but it will giv...
